It consists of two sets of circles for plotting various parameters of mismatched transmission lines. The follow-up interviews with patients at 6 and 12 months will help to understand why many graduates struggle to retain the benefits of DAFNE training (especially sustaining intensive self-management) and why some fare better than others post course and to explore patients’ perceptions of how they could be better supported long term. Where the tabletop version feels like a grand adventure, the digital version feels like a string of unconnected tactical battles. It’s a nice change of pace from the game in the box, not necessarily better or worse, just smaller in scale and having a different energy to it. ![]() All of those features are planned by its full launch some time next year, but for now, we have a new mode, taking our mercenaries on a randomly generated quest made up of several scenarios. In its current state, Gloomhaven is missing its classic campaign mode, its multiplayer capability, and 13 of the 17 character classes. When the first images for this version came out, I was ambivalent about them, but in motion, it looks and feels like Gloomhaven should. But it is satisfying to see some of them fully animated, as with the Cragheart’s Rumbling Advance, a short movement capped off with a stomp, flinging rock and debris in all directions, hurting both friend and foe. For many, I had images in my mind what is happening, based entirely off of the cards’ names and their effects. That said, the abilities are not mundane. In the digital version, there is no buildup and release it makes each modifier draw mundane. I can recall specific instances playing at the table where we had a make-or-break attack on the line, and everybody at the table is staring breathlessly at the attack modifier deck, hoping for a fortuitous +1 to land the killing blow. Heck, as an experienced player, it took me a few dungeons before I worked out what was what.Īnother downside to the way attack modifiers are handled is while you save time as compared to the deck, you lose the drama. The characters and enemies have icons as shorthand for different conditions and effects, but with no context, new players might not know what they mean. ![]() On PC, the attacks happen so quickly that it is not immediately obvious why a sword swing dealt no damage. In the board game, you have a deck of twenty cards that can modify your attacks anywhere between doubling the damage and completely nullifying it. One major example of this is the attack modifier system. The digital version in its current state does not make that any easier, because a lot of the gameplay elements that had to be handled manually are now automated, so it is not as obvious to see everything that is happening if you don’t already know it should be. It’s a little difficult to explain why the decision making in Gloomhaven is so satisfying without going deep into specific cards and rules interactions. It has an elegance to it, where masterful play will leave options open, setting up one combination of actions for a certain board state, but keeping the opposite set of actions on hand in case something unexpected happens. It sounds fairly simple because the system itself is simple, however, the cards themselves make for exciting decisions from turn to turn, often requiring players to plan one or two turns ahead of time. Some actions are more powerful and can only be used once per game. A character takes a turn by choosing to play the top half of one card and the bottom half of another and executing the associated actions. See, Gloomhaven uses a unique card-based action system in which the cards represent your abilities, your initiative, and your stamina. Namely, new players will almost certainly want to wait for the planned tutorial to release. But if you’ve been interested in the board game and want to try this out to see if you like it, you might be better off waiting for more features. If you’re like me, a person who has put hundreds of hours into the board game already, then Gloomhaven on PC has some distinct advantages: no need to carry that monster of a box around, no setup or takedown, and the addition of visual effects and sound. If that many people like the tabletop version that much, and we can get a digital version for less than a quarter of the price, then it should be worth it, right? For strategy gamers, it may seem like a no-brainer. The digital adaptation of the current top-rated board game on BoardGameGeek Gloomhaven was announced about a year ago, and it is now available on Steam Early Access. ![]() Like Listverse and Upworthy, submission does not necessarily mean a payout is guaranteed, and in the case of Guideposts, the stories must be inspiring and true-this can be a hard niche to hit. Rather than a consistent income, Upworthy is better considered a publishing opportunity. If your work is accepted, the payout will be around twenty-five cents a word. For this reason, Upworthy is a better place to start publishing, or seek initial publishing credits. This is the norm for the industry, and ServiceScape and Upwork are (for the most part) the exceptions to the rule. Unlike Upwork and ServiceScape, Upworthy relies on pitches from authors, which only pay out if they are accepted. ![]() Upworthy is unlike either ServiceScape or Upwork, which both support their authors and provide a variety of opportunities. Upworthy deals with projects that address social justice and positive news, and if you have unpublished work on those topics, you could do worse than to pitch the article to Upworthy. Authors can pitch directly to clients, but won't have to rely solely on marketing themselves: theoretically ClearVoice is a happy medium between the ServiceScape and Upwork styles of matching clients to freelancers. Unlike Upwork however, which places the stress of finding clients on the shoulders of the freelancer, ClearVoice directs clients toward writers and editors who match their profile, and this results in less time spent seeking new clients, and more time spent writing, editing, and making money. Then, like Upwork, ClearVoice links freelancers with clients. ![]() Like ServiceScape, ClearVoice allows a freelancer to develop their online portfolio, set their own rates, and verify their credentials. ClearVoiceĬlearVoice is similar to Upwork and to ServiceScape in many ways. Authors who value money over time will find Upwork is a good investment. Unlike sites like ServiceScape, where there is little room to approach new clients within the structure of the site, Upwork allows writers to invest time seeking out new projects. That being said, once the application process becomes familiar and streamlined, Upwork can offer more opportunities than most freelancing websites. It can be frustrating to spend time searching for work, rather than working. It takes a long time working with Upwork before clients begin to seek out the author, and this means that Upwork requires time dedicated to hunting down jobs. Upwork is a reasonable competitor to ServiceScape, but uses a more common project structure where writers seek out assignments and apply to them individually, rather than being sought out by clients. A university degree or an English as a second language teaching certificate will be a big draw for clients. Furthermore, credentials are confirmed by ServiceScape, so all of your writing and editing credentials, degrees or other certifications, can be displayed prominently. Happy clients generate more clients, and consistently happy clients will produce a correlated increase in earning. ServiceScape allows authors to set their own prices, and the amount of work they receive will be proportional to the quality of the service they provide as determined by the clients. The layout of the website is intuitive and clients come to the writer, rather than the author seeking them out. I work for Servicescape, and it's mostly excellent, at least as a supplementary income. Today I want to talk about a few websites where a writer's investment in their abilities can (literally) begin to pay off. I spend a lot of time writing about resources for writers, how much they cost, what they offer and whether they are worth it for authors and editors. While these opportunities can be important stepping stones toward a professional career, there comes a time when writers need to be paid for their expertise. Oftentimes, freelancers of an artistic persuasion are expected to work for exposure or to volunteer their services for friends and families. For writers, artists and editors, this is especially true. They say if you're good at something, never do it for free. ![]() Stored objects are saved, and structures have to be stored piece by piece in order to be saved.
